RJA #2b: Research Topic

The topic I am choosing to examine is "why America is selling out" because this is something that has caught my attention in the past few years. I feel this topic is something not discussed in main stream media and often goes unnoticed to a lot of people. I know some American icons like 7-11 convenience store, Budweiser, Hummer and Toll House cookies are often paralleled with the American identity but truth be told they are not owned by companies from the United States. I would like the explore the reasoning behind why these icons are not owned by United States companies. If they where once owned by domestic companies why the change? What was the contributing factors behind their sale. What other companies are lurking in the American spotlight with foreign ownership? Do we have an inverse relationship with our trading partners oversees for example are their foreign icons that are often considered icons owned by companies operating in the United States? Are certain sectors more attractive to foreign investors? I feel by examining these questions we can explore the root cause for this unspoken trend and possible identify which companies could be sold next. I plan on using the internet as a source of material for my research. I also want to verify the experience of a firm owned by a foreign entity and then to shop their competitor to see if they too are domestic or foreign owned.

  1. My initial impression, particularly from your title, is that your topic is more political than academic. If you take a historical or economic approach that shouldn't be a problem.
